Towards the end of last year I was kindly sent some Jerky and lean salami snacks from Top Herd to try.

We were delighted to have been given the opportunity to try a new snack because there’s only so many Hobnobs the Beast and I can eat in one day, and it’s always nice to try something different!

Here’s a little bit about the company and their products;

The company was started up by Philippa and her husband.  Philippa suffered with a bad back for years and after the birth of her twins she decided to overhaul her diet, started to exercise, get outside more, re-connect with nature and eventually she began to reap the rewards of her new healthy lifestyle and feels better than ever.

As part of Philippas diet overhaul she started to eat more protein and began to look for 100% natural, healthy meat snacks that would fuel her adventures.  She couldn’t find any on the market so together with her husband they started to make their own using a standard dehydrator in their kitchen.

They loved their creations so much and after sharing them with friends and family they decided to jump ship from their jobs and set up Top Herd.

What makes Top Herd different?

  • They do not add any nasties like sodium nitrites to any of their products

  • All of their products are 100% natural

  • All of their meat is sourced from small family farms in the Austrian Alps where the animals are allowed to roam about at their leisure and eat what nature intended. They care about animal welfare and have visited the farms themselves

  • They have won two Great Taste Awards

The company introduced Lean salami snacks to their range in September 2018; and these are 100% natural, high in protein, low fat, nitrite and gluten free.

The Beast and I will often have long days out exploring and we need fuel to keep us going.  One thing that’s important to me is to be able to ‘snack on the go’, I have two little zipped pockets on my rucksack and both of these are filled with handy snacks that I can nibble on as I walk.  The Top Herd pack size is perfect and I found that there was just enough in each serving to give me the boost I needed. I’ve tried similar snacks over the years only to be disappointed with both the taste which I found to be very artificial as well as the texture which I can’t actually think of a word apart from slimy to describe!  Top Herd snacks are nothing like this, and the companies claim to being natural and tasty was spot on.

The Beast and I are also love wild camping.  Once we’ve set up our tent then it’s time for food and our usual evening meal on a camp is cous cous.  It’s hot, easy to make and I don’t need to lug lots of extra cooking equipment up with me.  On our last camp we tried adding our jerky to the cous cous and it was a hit with both of us … a really tasty, filling meal in minutes.

The Top Herd Jerky range comes in six great flavours; Smokey BBQ Beef, Honey Mustard Pork, Tangy Tomato Beef, Chilli Lime Turkey, Zesty Lemon Turkey, and Sweet Pickled Beef.  The new lean Salami range comes in two great flavours; Tomato and Mild Chilli.  You can purchase all of the above as a ‘Go Wild Snack Box’ for £14; at £1.75 a pack I think this great value.

My review was completely unbiased; I haven’t been asked by the company to provide it but feel that if I find something I like then it would be a shame not to share the information.  The company’s website is https://www.topherd.co.uk/ … you can read a little bit more about them, check out some amazing recipes and order any of their products through their online ordering system.

Big thumbs and paws up from the Beast and I
