Water, water everywhere … but not a safe drop to drink

I drink a lot of fluids on my days out; by a lot I mean at least 2 litres carried in a bladder in my rucksack plus an emergency 500ml bottle … that’s a lot of extra weight to carry around all day, which is where a water filter comes in.

I was asked to try out the Pure Hydration Aquapure Traveller on my days out and I jumped at the chance to give it a go and reduce some of the weight I carry in my rucksack.

The Aquapure Traveller is a high performance personal water purification system (or IWP - Individual Water Purifier) that is designed for those of us who may find themselves in places where the water quality is dubious or even dangerous.  I think we all think about using a water filter to filter our drinking water, but it has many uses; brushing your teeth and rinsing your toothbrush to washing fruit or vegetables, cooking or using the water to make hot drinks.

The filter has been proven to reduce microbiological hazards and over 100 harmful heavy metals, pesticides and other hazardous chemicals.  The unique purifier incorporates their MAD (Mechanically Advanced Disinfection) technology that eliminates:
  • 99.9999% bacteria
  • 99.999% viruses
  • 99.99% larger pathogens
  • 99.9% of many chemicals
  • heavy metals
  • dirt and odour

Apart from using the Aquapure Traveller to filter my water, I’m also cutting down on plastic waste. I’ll admit there was a time when I would buy a 12 pack of water and I’d use this water to cook with on my camps, make drinks with, as well as using it for the dogs to drink if we weren’t near a water source.  I won’t harp on about the problems these throw away plastic bottle are creating on the environment, but with this water filter in my rucksack I don’t need to buy my small bottles of water anymore (huge money saving there too!)

Something I hadn’t thought about, but that Pure Hydration mentions was that the water filter would be ideal to use to irrigate wounds in emergencies. I’ve bathed a cut in a stream before now and not given much thought to the germs I could be washing an open wound with.

The Aquapure Traveller doesn’t use chemicals, it doesn’t require any wait time and it can be filled and used immediately.  One thing that particularly impressed me with this filter was that it’s squeezable, which means I can very easily fill up my water bladder with the filtered water.

Pure Hydration also sent me a Neoprene carry case; it has various attachments and I found this really handy on shorter hikes when I didn’t need a rucksack with me but still needed to keep hydrated (it also kept my water cold).

Would I recommend this bottle? … yes I would; I’ll always have a bladder in my rucksack because over time sipping water as I go is something I’ve got used to.  The beauty of the Aquapure Traveller is that I no longer have the worry of running out of safe drinking water which is something that’s happened to me in the past.
